Old Blocks Turn Into New China‑Chic Experience Hubs! Longquan Unlocks New Urban Life Through Intangible Cultural Heritage
"Wearing a red robe as the top scholar, with palace flowers pinned on the hat—how fresh and glorious!" Liucha Academy was brightly lit at nightfall. On the eight-immortal tables, ceramic bowls were filled with self-heal spike tea, while the audience gently fanned themselves with palm-leaf fans, enjoying the classic arias from the Huangmei Opera *The Female Princess Consort*. This ancient building, first built in the Qing Dynasty, has now been renovated into a cultural theater. Adopting the operation model of "fixed stage + mobile pop-up performances", it has become a popular cultural tourism destination for both local residents and visitors in Longquan, glowing with vitality and vigor in the new era.
"The audience can not only sip self-heal spike tea from ceramic bowls but also join in the arias passed by the performers on the spur of the moment. The nostalgic elements such as eight-immortal tables and old palm-leaf fans are meticulously reproduced offstage, which instantly evokes childhood memories and nostalgia for hometown." According to the person in charge of Huacheng Tianshi Commercial Operation Co., Ltd., the operator, more than 10,000 visitors have watched the performances since its launch in August, with young audiences accounting for over 40%.
Wang Ling, a local resident who came to watch the show with her family, shared: "While cracking sunflower seeds and listening to the opera leisurely, I suddenly found the warm memories of going to temple fairs with my grandmother as a child. My whole family enjoys this relaxed and comfortable atmosphere, and the ticket price is very affordable. It’s a great place to visit every day without financial pressure."
Ji Ziqing, a post-2000 civil servant, also told reporters: "I always wanted to go to Sichuan to experience authentic teahouse culture and slow-paced life, but I never made it for various reasons. Now Longquan has such a place, allowing me to appreciate the charm of teahouse culture without leaving home. It’s really wonderful."
This immersive performance experience is not only a "fashionable choice" favored by young people today but also the core of the revitalization of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) in West Street Historical and Cultural Block. Since August this year, with the launch of new business forms such as ICH theaters and cultural innovation experience halls, Sanjiangkou in West Street—a historical block bearing thousands of years of business and cultural heritage—has unfolded a new picture of cultural tourism that "sees people, sees objects, and sees life", naturally driving consumption in catering and accommodation along the city’s cultural tourism industry chain.
Lively, down-to-earth and popular—this is a vivid reflection of ICH glowing with "the warmth of daily life". In the Sanjiangkou area, Longquan has carefully arranged four major ICH experience zones: "Ancient Old Street", "Relics of the Song Dynasty", "Joyful ICH Experience" and "Grand Opera Appreciation". Regular "ICH Carnivals" feature successive ICH performances including lion dances, string puppet shows and mushroom farmers' self-defense art. Visitors can also experience life scenes such as Song-style tea whipping, traditional paper-cutting and bamboo weaving, allowing ICH to integrate into modern life in an all-round way and become a unique new cultural tourism scene.
Stepping into the ICH Creation & Cultural Innovation Pavilion, the "Ci Xin Chuan Yi" DIY bracelet workshop operated by Longquan Boyan Tourism and Culture Development Co., Ltd. was bustling with visitors. Tourists combined celadon beads with silver ornaments to create unique works, personally experiencing the charm of cross-border integration of Longquan celadon. "Longquan celadon has a beautiful glaze color in itself, and matching it with silver ornaments makes it more simple, elegant, luxurious and generous. Making a DIY celadon bracelet by hand is more meaningful than just buying souvenirs," Li Linling, a tourist from Shanghai, happily showed her bracelet to reporters.
"Our cultural and creative products are also very popular," said the person in charge of Boyan Tourism. This year, the company newly launched five series of cultural and creative products, including chibi-style figurines of Ye Shaoweng, cultural relic replica blind boxes, commemorative coins of Longquan Celadon Museum, and Longquan city-themed fridge magnets. In just one week, the sales volume of Longquan celadon fridge magnets alone reached more than 1,600 pieces. "What we reproduce is not cultural relics, but a way of life, so they are very popular among young people today."
This concept is fully embodied in the Sanjiangkou area. The latte art at MOJ Water Tower Coffee complements the celadon ice crack pattern; Southeast Asian silver ornaments in the store "Duo Er Yi Zan" stand side by side with Longquan sword pendants; and the 180-degree river view at "Light Chaser Outdoor Theme Sports Bar & Restaurant" coexists harmoniously with the ancient architectural style. These cultural dialogues across time and space form the most touching scenery of the block.

West Street Sanjiangkou is rich in historical relics, dotted with stilt houses along the stream, Gongtou Wharf, Piyun Bridge spanning both banks, and Mansion of Minister Mao. It also houses Ye Pu's Former Residence, a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit, as well as municipal-level ones such as Yunshui Canal, Deng's Mansion and Yangdui Wharf, all of which contain huge historical and cultural value. How to "bring to life" these static historical resources is the core task of the renewal of the Sanjiangkou area.
Through scene iteration and spatial reconstruction, Longquan strives to build the Sanjiangkou area into a trendy urban life hub that "strengthens leisure business forms and shapes a people-flow center". At present, the occupancy rate of 20 business formats in Sanjiangkou has reached 100%, forming a diverse and rich business ecosystem: "Wucang · Hidden Food Restaurant" offers high-end and elegant Western-style dining; "San Liang Feng Syrup Shop" creates light internet-famous fashion catering; "Childhood Memories" grocery store awakens consumers' collective memories; "Longquan Happy Event Street" innovatively integrates marriage custom culture, urban gifts and tourism experiences, allowing traditional culture to reach young people in a "one-stop" way...

"The living inheritance and utilization of cultural heritage can not only promote the contemporary value of cultural heritage in an all-round way but also release its economic benefits in multiple dimensions," said the relevant person in charge of Longquan Cultural Tourism Company. As consumers' sense of identity and pride in traditional culture continues to grow, traditional culture will continuously empower new consumption formats and activate new consumption drivers. Next, the company will fully rely on the people flow and waterfront landscape advantages of Sanjiangkou, encourage the renewal and upgrading of existing business forms, improve supporting infrastructure and functions, and build a diversified destination integrating ICH, cultural innovation, food and other leisure experiences.
